Powering OKX Wallet's Gas Station: High-Performance Gas Abstraction for the Smart Wallet Era

Custom transaction relay infrastructure for one of the world's most widely used self-custodial wallets.

Overview

OKX Wallet is one of the largest self-custodial wallets in the world, with over 3 million users transacting across dozens of blockchains every day. When the OKX team set out to launch Gas Station — a native gas abstraction feature built for their new EIP-7702 smart wallet — they needed a relayer backend that could match the scale and reliability their users demand.

They partnered with 1Shot API to build the infrastructure underneath.

The Challenge: Gas Abstraction at Scale

EIP-7702 is a meaningful leap forward for wallet UX. It lets traditional Ethereum EOA accounts temporarily behave like smart contract accounts — unlocking sponsored transactions, batch operations, and flexible gas payment without requiring users to hold native gas tokens on every chain they interact with.

But enabling this cleanly across millions of users requires more than a standard smart account setup. Gas Station needed a publicly accessible, high-performance transaction relayer that could accept sponsored transactions, handle gas payment in stablecoins, and operate reliably across a broad set of networks — all without adding latency or friction to the wallet experience.

What 1Shot API Built

1Shot API designed and deployed a custom public transaction relayer purpose-built for OKX Wallet's EIP-7702 smart wallet standard. The Gas Station relayer supports:

  • 12 blockchain networks, giving OKX users gas abstraction across the chains they use most
  • Stablecoin gas payment in USDT, USDG, and USDC — no native tokens required
  • Public accessibility, so any OKX Wallet user can benefit without additional setup
  • High-performance throughput, engineered for the transaction volumes a 3M+ user wallet generates

The result is a seamless experience where users can transact on supported networks without ever thinking about which gas token they need or whether they have enough of it.

Immediate Adoption

Gas Station launched on April 8, 2026 and saw immediate usage from day one. The feature was announced directly by the OKX Wallet team and quickly picked up by the community — a reflection of how much demand exists for this kind of frictionless, chain-agnostic experience in self-custodial wallets. Try it in OKX Wallet for Chrome or visit the app store for iOS and Android.

Why It Matters

The smart wallet transition — driven by standards like EIP-7702 and EIP-7710 — is moving fast, and gas abstraction is one of the highest-impact UX improvements it enables. But the infrastructure to support it at production scale is non-trivial. Wallets need relayers that are reliable, fast, multi-chain, and designed for the specific transaction formats these new standards introduce.

This is exactly what 1Shot API is built to deliver: purpose-built web3 infrastructure for the new generation of smart wallets, ready to deploy when teams need it most.
